Astrophysics, Dynamical Systems and Fractals - past and future
A conference to mark the formal retirement of Professor Mircea V. Rusu
University of Bucharest, Department of Physics, Magurele, Romania, 26-27 April 2007
Round-table on Astrophysics Future in Romania
Invited to the round-table discussions were:
Prof. Dr. Stefan Antohe -- Dean of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Bucharest
Prof. Dr. Alexandru Jipa -- Scientific coordinator of the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest
Prof. Dr. Florin Popescu -- Head of the Atomic and Nuclear Physics Department, University of Bucharest
The discussions were centered on the future of the Astrophysics in Romania, especially at the University of Bucharest. The chairman of the round-table discussions was Sinziana Paduroiu, PhD student at the University of Zurich.
The main issues addressed were:
- the review of progress in Astrophysics in Romania,
- the necessity for continuing Astrophysics studies at the University of Bucharest,
- the development of collaborations with similar groups in Romania,
- the advertisement of Romanian Astrophysics research,
- and the founding of an Astrophysics Research Center at the University of Bucharest.
The round-table discussions covered the full agenda and have achieved a number of commitments. The most significant commitment was the foundation of an Astrophysics Research Center at the University of Bucharest.
This research center, under the proposed name "Center for Atomic Physics and Astrophysics", is intended to be a sub-department of the Atomic and Nuclear Physics Department at the University of Bucharest, and its purpose will be to conduct research and teaching activities in various fields, such as Cosmic Rays, Cosmology, Solar Physics and Radioastronomy. The Center for Atomic Physics and Astrophysics is expected to begin activities is Autumn 2007.
