MINI-LUNI ale Pământului?

În august 2024, oamenii de știință au observat o „minilună” numită 2024 PT prinsă pentru scurt timp de gravitația Pământului. Această rocă spațială, de dimensiunea unei mașini, a fost observată de telescopul hawaiian ATLAS și va rămâne temporar pe orbita Pământului. Cercetătorii sunt curioși în legătură cu originile sale, deoarece ar putea fi o bucată de asteroid sau chiar resturi lunare. Studierea acestor miniluni îi ajută pe oamenii de știință să înțeleagă mai bine natura și originile unor astfel de obiecte mici, care trec în apropierea Pământului.

The asteroid moved at a rate of 34.3 arcminutes per hour (13.7 degrees per day) in the northwest direction. The asteroid makes a  ∼ 9 pixel trail in the 30 s ATLAS exposures, indicated by the red circle. Panel b: the same as panel a but shows the image after subtracting static sources. Despite the presence of nearby stars, the asteroid is detected cleanly in the subtracted images. Panel c: the same as panel a, but the second of four o-band images containing 2024 PT5 taken on 2024 August 7 21:16:35 UTC. Panel d: the same as panel c but shows the image after subtracting static sources. The asteroid was detected with an apparent magnitude of o=17.13 in panel b and o=16.99 in panel c. The large black areas in the subtracted images are regions of saturated pixels from bright stars. The direction of the asteroid and cardinal directions are indicated in each figure.
