„Scoala Altfel” at the Institute of Space Science

The Institute of Space Science from Magurele opens its doors this year too for the 2015 edition of the “Scoala Altfel” program during the week between 6-10 April, which will be dedicated to educational extracurricular and nonacademic activities. The activities will be held at the Tower building of the Institute of Atomic Physics (IFA), Atomistilor Street 407.

During this period the courses won’t be held according to the usual program of the educational institutions and the event will be held in accordance with a particular schedule.

Catalin Negrea, researcher of the Institute of Space Science (ISS) within the Laboratory of Space Plasma and Magnetometry won the award for the best poster presented by a student (Outstanding Student Poster – OSP) following the annual conference of the European Geosciences Union – EGU held in Vienna from 27 April to 2 May 2014.

33 years since the first flight of a Romanian cosmonaut, Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu

PrunariuOn 14 May 1981, at 17:16:38 UTC, the Soyuz-40 mission was launched, taking on board the first Romanian cosmonaut, Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu. The mission was part of the Intercosmos program and lasted 7 days, 20 hours, 41 minutes, 52 seconds. On 15 May, Soyuz-40 docked on Salyut-6 space station. Altogether, the crew orbited the Earth 124 times, while the Romanian cosmonaut was studying the Earth’s magnetic field. There were also studies on the station’s guidance system and Earth observation studies over the territory of Romania.

Romania became a full member of the Pierre Auger international cooperation

On March 13, 2014, Romania was officially accepted as a full member state in the “Pierre Auger Observatory” international collaboration. Spread over an area of ​​3000 km2 in Argentina, Auger is the largest cosmic radiation experiment in the world. The collaboration allows the Romanian researchers to contribute to discerning the mysteries  of ultra-high energies cosmic rays.

Between 14 and 18 October 2013, the Institute of Space Science (ISS) hosted the “Detection of nuclear emulsions and their future workshop”. The event, held in Predeal, Romania, was organized in collaboration with the Lebedev Physics Institute (Moscow, Russia), Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia), Institute Dosimetry (Prague, Czech Republic) and Safarik University (Kosice, Slovakia) .

The Institute of Space Science develops the RoBiSAT space mission – Two nanosatellites launched by the QB50 international collaboration

RoBiSAT is the name of the Institute of Space Science’s mission that aims to develop and verify the critical technologies necessary for the nanosatellites formation flight. A specific characteristic of this initiative is the study of the technological solutions for obtaining radio communications for data exchange and commands between two identical satellites located on low-Earth orbit.
