Starwalker seminars – „Psycho-neuro-motor approach in understanding and developing Human Performance”, 21 January 2015

3The scientific conference on „The Psycho-neuro-motor approach in understanding and developing Human Performance” took place on 21 January 2015 within the General Seminar Starwalker, at the Institute of Space Science premises, and it was presented by Prof. Dr. Pierre de Hillerin, member of the Competence Centre in Space Technologies for Human Spaceflight Support – Starwalker.

The program of the seminar included a conference and then debates attended by active members of the Centre and also by a number of guests from fields like Natural Sciences and Human Sciences associated with the evaluation, training and recovery of Human Performance.2

The concept of Human Performance is essential to the preparation and protection of astronauts exposed to the extraterrestrial environment, characterised by microgravity, isolation and physical and mental confinment (MICE – Microgravity, Isolated and Confined Environment). The Human Performance improvement methods applied to astronauts also lead to the development of terrestrial applications for the benefit of society through a technology transfer process known as spin-off. Among the areas where such applications can be developped are: rehabilitation medicine, assistance for people with physical disabilities or for senior people, training of high occupational risk personnel, training in high performance sports etc.

The conference is the first step of an educational and interdisciplinary stimulating project initiated by the Starwalker Competence Center which is operating within the Institute of Space Science. The project aims to organise a series of conferences and debates dedicated to specialists involved in studies and applications to counteract the adverse effects of spaceflight on humans (countermeasures) but also to young researchers and students in related fields, current or potential collaborators.

The Competence Centre in Space Technologies for Human Spaceflight Support– Starwalker is part of a suite of seven competence centers developed through the STAR Programme – Space Technology and Advanced Research. Through these centers, the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) aims to increase the international competitiveness and visibility of Romanian space science and technology. Within the Institute of Space Science two of the seven competence centers are operating.
