Since the dawn of human
civilization, Life set forth an irresistible fascination
on man and raised existential questions about its origins
and its future on Earth. Once the Mankind entered the
Space Age, the ancient questions on Life got new perspectives
and new dimensions putting forward challenging questions:
|
Fundamental, even philosophic:
- What is Life?
- The Life, as we know it, is the single possible
form of Life in the Universe?
- Are we alone in the Universe?
- Where do we come from and where are we going?
... or more pragmatic ones:
- The terrestrial life could survive and proliferate
in the Space?
- How the Universe determine the terrestrial life
and its future?
- Are out there dangers in the Space?
- Could we protect terrestrial Life against dangers
originating in Space?
- Space based technologies could help for terrestrial
life safety? |

The search for life in the outer space is a key topic
for the space agencies around the world. For example,
What
are the conditions for planet formation and the emergence
of life? is a major theme of the Cosmic
Vision program of ESA,
to be addressed e.g. by the JUpiter ICy moons Explorer
(JUICE)
mission, with expected launch in 2022. The origin, evolution,
and existence of life in the Solar System and beyond are
also among the big
questions explored by the Science
Mission Directorate of NASA.
Based on already confirmed results, on new ongoing as
well as intended research, an interdepartmental group
of scientists from the Institute of Space Science, capitalizing
on the previous expertise gained in space disciplines,
aims to promote an integrated vision on life in the universe
and call for cooperation. read
