The Institute of Space Science (ISS) invites the Romanian university students to apply until 31 March 2015 for the 39th edition of the annual Alpbach Summer School, which will be held from 14 to 23 July 2015, and will focus on “Quantum Physics and Fundamental Physics in Space”.
60 students and graduates in engineering and science from ESA’s Member and Cooperating states will be selected to participate in this year’s edition of the Alpbach Summer School, an event which aims to foster the practical application of knowledge derived from lectures, to develop organisational and group skills and to encourage the creativity of the participants. Students will be split into 4 teams and will work intensely to design a space mission aiming to investigate how satellite missions could help develop and enrich quantum physics research, or how future satellite missions could benefit from quantum physics. The projects will be judged by an independent jury of experts.
The selected Summer School students will attend stimulating lectures on various aspects of space science and technology. They will be exposed to some real-life challenges, such as 20-hour working days (before proposal submission) and an expectation that they are able to immediately apply knowledge and techniques that they have only recently been exposed to. The participants will also have to find a balance between the scientific objectives and requirements and the realistic constraints of mission design, spacecraft design, and mission cost.
The working language will be English.
The Online Application form is available here.
The Alpbach Summer School is organised by the Aeronautics and Space Agency of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). It is co-sponsored by ESA and the national space authorities of its Member and Cooperating States. A traditional partner is the International Space Science Institute (ISSI). It is also supported by Austrospace, the association of Austrian space industries and research institutions.
